welcome to the space age

1962...
An era of birth to some of the most famous and historic pop culture icons in the world. If one travelled back in time to 1962 and turned the dial on that super cute retro radio, one would probably hear the sweet sounds of the newly debuted folk artist, Bob Dylan, or witness the birth of surf music from our pals the Beach Boys. Andy Warhol's infamous Campbell's soup can would be circulating the media, as well as Sean Connery's breakthrough role as "Bond...James Bond." 1962 was also the end of an era for  the famous Marilyn Monroe, as the star was found dead on August 5. It was the rise of the space age, where the possibilities of technological advancement seemed endless, and almost everyone owned a television set! Kennedy was on top as American faced threats of nuclear demise, and the CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS ANYONE?? In Canada (represent), there was Diefenbaker or whatever. The fashion was great, the hair was great, the cars were great and Walmart launched its first location in it's long term evil plan TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD.
But, contrary to what was believed at that time, we can't go back in time (BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT, EARTH), so here are some pictures and a video of me and my friend, Quinn, singing a song that wasn't as popular as some of the other songs back then but is still great and we are wearing top hats.

Rookie Magazine focuses on the fad that was the future, in the blast from the past article about retro-futurism: Literally the Best Thing Ever: Retro-futurism!

here is simple and happy

If you haven't gotten around to watching the 2010 film, "Beginners", directed by Mike Mills, you're really silly. I recently partook in this activity and was not at all disappointed. I had been wanting to watch this film for-EVER, but it got lost in the chaos of my brain until one day when I was looking for my old winter jacket (which is unfortunately lost for-EVER) and I remembered inside the front pocket of this lost winter jacket was a folded picture of Ewan McGregor*. And so after crying a lot because the picture was gone too, I hopped on my computer (not actually, it would break if I literally did) and finally watched "Beginners". The movie stars Ewan McGregor (if you didn't catch that) as Oliver Fields, a young man trying to deal with his recent past and present. His past is his father, Christopher Plummer as Hal Fields, announcing to Oliver that he is going to die, and that he is in love with a younger man named Andy. His present is Anna, played by THE AMAZING Mélanie Laurent, the mysterious and alluring French (!!!!) actress who helps Oliver come to terms with life after his father's passing. The movie shifts from past to present and portrays Oliver observing his father, and himself, really fall in love for the first time.
The movie was written and directed by Mike Mills and is both hilarious and heart-breaking. It is wonderful in every aspect: the casting, the music, the script, everything. You'll see beautiful people (Ewan McGregor), cute/funny/creative drawings, Ewan McGregor, a super cool mom, Ewan McGregor, and oh right, a very introspective talking dog.

ALSOOOO, I came across a somewhat new song from Slow Club that I hadn't heard yet that's also called "Beginners", and the music video stars Daniel Radcliffe dancing drunkenly around a bar, alone. It's really quite wonderful as well. This is my love song.

*I once carried a picture of Ewan McGregor's face in my coat pocket all throughout Europe. We saw and experienced so much together. It was a very romantic trip for the two of us, and even though we are apart now, we will always have those memories..........IT STILL HURTS THOUGH, YOU KNOW?!? Hold me.

ice dance

*~Today was the first snowfall of the season so I'm writing in blue! Because snow is blue, right?!~*
And while I feel like I should be enjoying the day like this:
(...actually I kind of want to punch this person square in the jaw.)

I'm more like this:
"Ohhh it's so pretty out oooh look at that. That's nice. I'll just sit here though, yeah it's nicer from here."

It really is beautiful though, and I would totally go out and play in it if I didn't have to... sit here instead.  I'm the kind of person who loves snow and is all, "SNOW ANGELLSSSS!!! LET'S WATCH "HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS"! WHAT HOW CAN YOU THINK THE JIM CARREY VERSION IS BETTER? YOU JUST CAN'T BEAT ORIGINALS!!! SWEATERS AND MITTENS!!" until it's here the next day and then I'm all, "Hasn't this gone on long enough... :|" It's kind of like my mindset when was in school (suuuuuuuch a long time ago) and Paranormal Activity movies (mostly just the last part, though).
ANYWHO FROM WHOVILLE, here's my first snowfall playlist and my first snowfall outfit (where I actually did step outside into the falling snow because it looked nicer and maybe some of you thought I was lying)

Poncho over thrifted navy dress and cardigan, wool socks and lil red boots! My favourite mittens and another francais beret (that rhymes)! I was going to wear my silvery blue lipstick but I thought that might make me look like I have a case of ye ol' hypothermia! A ho ho hooooo....enjoy the snow before you get sick of it... or die...from hypothermia...!!

you speak to me in words and I look at you with feelings

If only I could pull off short Bettie bangs to go with all this stylish-French-independent-leading-lady energy I have built up deep inside! Instead, here's me in a red beret to cover my unfortunate hair, and an entire consignment store ensemble. Look! I'm color coordinated to match the trees in my front yard! Or are the trees in my front yard color coordinated to match me? How avant garde!

Some awesome stylish-independent-leading-ladies:

hometown hero

If we aren't already Facebook friends, and I haven't already spammed you with my most recent photoshoot featuring the wondrous Kiki Babbel, then you're in luck! If you want to call it that. For this shoot I converted my brother's old room (sort, Matt, but you don't even go here) into the room of my dreams, inspired by a mix between the Virgin Suicides and Romeo & Juliet (the Leonardo DiCaprio version, obviously). Since there are way too many photos to include on a single blog post without giving someone an aneurysm, I'm just posting my favorite shots! And you can see the rest HEREEEEE!! Unless you have better things to do. Which is highly plausible. Throughout the duration of this whimsical photoshoot, we listened Andy Shauf's new album, "The Bearer of Bad News" about 4 times over. If you haven't had the chance to listen to it yet, please do yourself this favor and do so. You don't have better things to do this time.
